Fiat Kobelco EX235

Fiat Kobelco EX235 crawler excavator, year 2003, 23.5-tonne class. A machine from
the generation built to last: fully mechanical, no complicated control units — the
kind any workshop can repair.

It is fitted with the IVECO 8065.25.085 engine, a 5,900 cc straight-six delivering
107 kW (145 hp). This is an Italian engine of industrial origin, used on many
different machines: sturdy, with good torque and — something that matters a great
deal — spare parts that are still easy to find and sensibly priced.

Being a 2003 machine, it has no diesel particulate filter (DPF) and no AdBlue. That
means no regeneration cycles, no emissions control unit playing up, and no downtime
for that reason. You know your running costs upfront.

The 23.5-tonne class is the most practical size in earthmoving: you get the power
for bulk excavation and light demolition, while still having a machine you can load
onto an ordinary low loader and take to site without special permits. The bucket
supplied is 1.1 m³, the right size for this weight: it fills well without straining
the machine.
